S3.13 - Cryptobenthic fish and the importance of habitat on coastal defence
structure in North Adriatic Sea

A structured hierarchical sampling design, using a modified visual census
technique, was applied to observe cryptic fishes on coastal defence structures
in the North Adriatic Sea. Two locations, Cesenatico and CasalBorsetti, were
randomly selected in the North Adriatic Sea. In each of these locations three
breakwaters were selected. Both the seaward (exposed) and landward (sheltered)
sides of these defence structures
were studied. On each side, fish densities were estimated along randomly
selected 5x1 m transects. The percentage cover of benthic organisms, and other
substratum types, were calculated using a 1 m2 quadrat. The structural
complexity of the breakwaters was determined by the
chain-link method. During the two-year study, sixteen species of fishes were
observed. There was a positive correlation between diversity and density of
cryptic fish assemblages and substratum complexity. All exposed sides had a
similar fish community structure and habitat characteristics.
The Principal Component Analysis revealed a difference between the exposed and
the sheltered sides of the breakwaters. Canonical Analysis of Principal
Coordinates stressed the relationship between habitat characteristics and fish
assemblages.
