The screening ecological risk resulting from the bioaccumulation of a mixture
of estrogenic compounds was estimated for a representative aquatic food web in
the Venice lagoon according to the US-EPA (1998) procedure. The selected food
web model was composed by phytoplankton and zooplankton, benthic organisms
grouped according to their feeding strategies, and fish species. The exposure
database included experimental concentrations of both natural (i.e. estradiol,
estrone), and synthetic (i.e. ethynylestradiol, benzophenone, bisphenol-A,
diethylstilbestrol, nonylphenol) estrogenic compounds in sediments, water and
in biota, as well as the estrogenic compounds concentration estimated by a
kinetic bioaccumulation model. The ecological effects were estimated by
analysing literature data concerning endocrine-related endpoints (i.e.
vitellogenin induction, reproduction, ovo-testis) for estradiol, according to
a data evaluation procedure based on a specific scoring system. Finally, risk
was obtained by Hazard Quotient method, rationing the exposure concentration
of the estrogenic mixture as EEQ (Estradiol Equivalency) by the effect
concentrations.
